The War Lovers by Evan Thomas7/8/2023 Depressed by the "closing" of the Western frontier and embracing theories of social Darwinism, a group of warmongers that included a young Teddy Roosevelt and Henry Cabot Lodge agitated loudly and incessantly that the United States exert its influence across the seas. Soon after, the blandly handsome and easily influenced President McKinley declared war, sending troops not only to Cuba but also to the Philippines, Spain's sprawling colony on the other side of the world.Īs Evan Thomas reveals in his rip-roaring history of those times, the hunger for war had begun years earlier. Although there was no evidence that the Spanish were responsible, yellow newspapers such as William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal whipped Americans into a frenzy by claiming that Spain's "secret infernal machine" had destroyed the battleship. On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor.

The Slynx by Tatyana Tolstaya7/8/2023 And Benedikt, a Golubchik employed as one of the numerous scribes recording the dictator’s ostensible works, naively incarnates both his people’s passive servitude, and-once he’s introduced to forbidden books by “Oldeners” who deny Fyodor Kuzmich’s virtual divinity-their urge toward enlightenment and freedom. A ravenous mythical beast, the slynx, further impairs the wretched lives of oppressed workers (“Golubchiks”), prowling the ruined city’s dark outskirts. Moscow is now called Fyodor-Kuzmichsk, in honor of its seldom-seen dictator Kablukov, a paternalistic egotist who is reputed to have invented every useful object now known to man and to be the author of the classic literary works he blithely plagiarizes. The setting is what once was Moscow, two hundred years after “the Blast” that leveled the metropolis, leaving a frozen wasteland clogged with trash and populated by a mixture of “normal” human beings and grotesque mutants. A strikingly imagined first novel (after stories: On the Golden Porch, 1989 Sleepwalker in a Fog, 1992) skillfully creates a frightening and perversely funny postnuclear world.

Bared to you series order7/7/2023 “Walk fast, work out faster.” Cary’s perfectly executed arched brow made me laugh. “After I time the walk to work, I’m going to hit the gym.” “I don’t know if I’ll make it back in time.” I gestured at my yoga pants and fitted workout tank. We can hit a happy hour and be in by eight.” “I’m not talking about a bender,” he insisted. I might have resented that if he hadn’t been the dearest person on earth to me. Leanly built, dark-haired, and green-eyed, Cary was a man who rarely looked anything less than absolutely gorgeous on any day of his life. We’d been unpacking for days, yet he still looked amazing. “Come on, Eva.” Cary sat on our new living room floor amid a half dozen moving boxes and flashed his winning smile. “I’m sure drinking the night before starting a new job is a bad idea.” I’d always considered it part of his charm. Cary Taylor found excuses to celebrate, no matter how small and inconsequential. I wasn’t surprised by my roommate’s emphatic pronouncement.

The iron man ted hughes full film7/7/2023 Eventually, the metallic giant is discovered and wins the sympathy of the townspeople, but when he’s attacked by an army contingent, his defense system is activated, transforming him into a war machine. The incident draws the attention of Kent Mansley, a paranoid government agent, who suspects Hogarth and stays in a room in his house, rented by Hogarth’s mother, a widow of a military pilot and waitress at a restaurant. Hogarth finds an alien giant robot and becomes his friend, hiding it in a junkyard. In the 1950s, during a period of tension and ideological and geopolitical conflicts in the so-called Cold War, a boy named Hogarth Hughes investigates the fall of an object from space near the city of Rockwell. On a themed diorama base, bringing the movie logo in the front, surrounded by the crown of large trees with orange leaves of autumn next to sturdy pines, Iron Studios proudly present their statue "Iron Giant & Hogarth Hughes - The Iron Giant - Demi Art Scale 1/20", with the giant robot and his young friend, protagonists of this classic story that became a praised fantasy and science fiction classic. Together, they create a strong bond of union, partnership, and learning, in which the boy teaches the mechanical being heroic values and life and death concepts of humanity. On the plains of a forest in the North American countryside, an armored colossal, docile, and curious autonomous being from another world gently raises a boy in his right hand.

Desert solitaire author7/6/2023 As such he taps into some tried and true American themes such as the romantic myth of self-sufficiency and our persistent national history of anti-city bias. While he offers detail and poetry about the desert and about untouched places, he sneers at the urban, at those he sees as lesser than himself. And while he may wish for us as readers to appreciate what he appreciates, he seems uninterested in allowing for other joys by other people. It is one thing to have a deep and abiding appreciation for a place, a thing, an experience, an environment, but Abbey seems determined that only certain sorts should be allowed to share that joy. However, I have concluded, with apologies to Ernest Thompson, that Edward Abbey is an old poop. He tells tales of people he has known and in doing so enhances an image of his southwest as at once a beautiful and terrible place. In the 18 essays that make up the book, he offers not only his appreciation for the sometimes harsh environment of Utah and Arizona, but his notions on things political. As a ranger at Arches National Park he had a close relationship with some of our country’s most exquisite scenery. Desert Solitaire seemed the right book to take along on a trip to the southwest in September 2009.Ībbey writes of the beauty of the southwest. |
